A match gave you their number, and you want to see their Instagram or Facebook before you meet. Most matches are who they say they are, and a public profile that fits their story is reassuring.
Short answer: You usually can't type a phone number into a social network and get the person's profile. Facebook says a search for a phone number won't show the profile, and Instagram documents no phone-number search at all. What works is narrower: save the number and open WhatsApp, Telegram or Signal, let contact suggestions on X or Snapchat do the matching, search the number on the web, and run a reverse image search on their dating photos. Most of these depend on the person's privacy settings.
Can you find someone on each app by phone number?
Read from each platform's own help pages on 1 October 2026 (X's from an archived copy of 27 September, because the live page was blocked). Settings move, so check the page linked in each row before you rely on it.
| Platform | Can someone with the number find the account? | The setting that decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Not through search. The number can feed friend suggestions. | "Who can Facebook suggest your profile to based on your phone number or email address" (default: Possible Connections) | |
| No phone-number search is documented. The account may be recommended to people who have the number in their contacts. | None named. It applies once they confirm their number on Instagram and you sync your contacts. | |
| X | Yes, if you upload your contacts and the person allows it | "Let people who have your phone number find you on X" |
| Depends on the person's choice | 'Discoverability by phone number' | |
| WhatsApp says any user can see the profile photo by default. | Privacy settings for profile photo, About, last seen and online, and status | |
| Telegram | Depends on their setting. Set to My Contacts, a stranger who saves the number can't match it to the profile. | 'Who Can Find Me By My Number' (shows up once 'Who Can See My Phone Number' is set to Nobody) |
| Signal | Yes by default, unless they turned it off | 'Who can find me by my number' (default: Everybody) |
| Snapchat | Search works by name or username. A saved number, once you sync contacts, can surface them in Find Friends. | 'Mobile Number' in Settings |
| Venmo | PayPal users can, if the person is searchable to them under Find Me. Use it only to confirm a name and photo. | Find Me, in Privacy settings |
Why a phone number search often comes up empty
Most apps treat your number as private and let you decide who can match it to your account.
Facebook is the clearest case. Its help page says: "If someone searches for your email address or mobile phone number using Facebook's search feature, the search results won't show your profile." The number is used for suggestions instead, and Facebook says the default setting is Possible Connections, meaning people who uploaded your number or email and your friends of friends. The other choices are Friends of Friends, Friends and No one.
Instagram says "Mobile numbers and email addresses are always private on your Instagram accounts." Its help pages describe finding people through your synced contacts or the Search tab. Typing a number is not among them.
On X and LinkedIn, the lookup mostly happens when someone uploads an address book. X says that if someone has your number in their contacts, "they may find your account when they upload those contacts to X," and that your phone number is not shown publicly. LinkedIn says your number won't appear on your profile unless you add it to your Contact Info section, and that other permitted services may also look up your profile using your email address or phone number.
So an empty result does not mean your match is fake. It often means they chose a private setting, which is a reasonable thing to do.
How to check a match's social media from their number
Work through these in order. Stop when you have seen enough to feel comfortable.
1. Search the number on the web
Type the number into a search engine in a few formats, with and without the area code in brackets, and in quotes. A number someone has used publicly may show up next to their name. Facebook notes one more route: if someone shared their number in a post, people may be able to find that post by searching for the number.
2. Save the number and open the messaging apps
On WhatsApp this step can show a profile photo. On Telegram, it depends on the person's find-by-number setting. On Signal, the same kind of setting decides whether you can see that the number is on Signal at all.
- WhatsApp. Save the number as a contact and open WhatsApp. By default, WhatsApp says any user can see your profile photo. The person's About text, status and last seen are shown to their contacts by default. Most of these can be set to Everyone, My Contacts, My Contacts Except or Nobody (status can't be set to Everyone), so a blank photo may simply be a privacy choice. WhatsApp also says there is no way to hide your phone number from people you message.
- Telegram. Telegram's FAQ says that by default, your number is only visible to people you have added to your address book as contacts. Since 2019, Telegram has had a 'Who Can Find Me By My Number' setting, which shows up once 'Who Can See My Phone Number' is set to Nobody. Set to My Contacts, it means a stranger who saves the number can't match it to the profile.
- Signal. On 20 February 2024, Signal announced that your number would no longer be visible to everyone you chat with by default. Its 'Who can find me by my number' setting still defaults to Everybody, so a number can be found on Signal unless the person changed that setting to Nobody. With Nobody, Signal says someone who enters the number can't even see that they are on Signal. Signal also keeps profile names and photos private: its support page says a profile is shared with your saved contacts, people in conversations you start, people you accept, and some groups.
A WhatsApp profile photo that shows the same person as the dating photos is a good sign. A different face is worth a question. A blank photo is not, since it may be a privacy choice.
3. Let contact suggestions do the matching
X, Snapchat and Instagram can suggest accounts from your contacts. LinkedIn also matches numbers, though its help page describes the suggestion going the other way.
- On X, the person's account can come up if their setting allows it and you upload your contacts.
- On LinkedIn, the person decides through 'Discoverability by phone number'. LinkedIn also says that if someone uploads an address book that includes your number, it may suggest them to you as a connection. So syncing your contacts can put you in your match's suggestions too.
- On Snapchat, you search for people by name or username. Find Friends (the feature that used to be called Quick Add) can draw on contacts: Snapchat says you may still see friends there if you are in other Snapchatters' contacts, and all users can turn off showing up in Find Friends in Settings.
- On Venmo, Find Me in Privacy settings decides whether people can find you. Venmo says that if you are searchable to PayPal users, they can find and pay you using your phone number. It is a payment app, so use it only to confirm a name and photo.
One caution: contact syncing can upload your address book, not just your match's number. Snapchat sends you to your device's settings to choose an access level (on iOS, Full Access or Limited Access), and says it may store contact names, hashed phone numbers and email addresses. Instagram says deleting synced contacts can take up to 90 days. If you would rather not share your contacts, skip this step.
4. Compare what you find with the dating profile
Look for the basics. Check that the name, the photos and the work or city they mentioned line up with the dating profile. A few years of ordinary posts, friends who comment and a job that matches their story are reassuring signs.
5. Run a reverse image search on their photos
The FTC's advice on romance scams is direct: "Do a reverse image search of the person's profile picture." If the photo comes up under another name, or with details that don't match, the FTC calls those signs of a scam. This step works even when the number finds nothing.
What a match does and doesn't tell you
Finding an account linked to the number tells you the number is real and in use, and that someone presents themselves a certain way online. It does not prove the account belongs to the person you have been talking to. A number can belong to someone else now, and an account can carry a borrowed photo.
Not finding anything tells you even less. Plenty of real people keep their number private on every app. Treat an empty search as neutral, and let a video call settle it. Tinder calls a phone or video call "a useful screening tool before meeting."
What not to do
You may see advice to use a site's "forgot password" page to see a hint of who owns a number. Don't. It means posing as that person to their own account, which is not a fair way to treat a match.
Keep the check about your own safety before a date. Don't use these steps to find where someone lives, to watch a partner, or to reach someone who has blocked you.
People-search sites and background reports are a separate matter, and the law treats them differently. In a September 2023 release about two people-search sites, an FTC official said that "if you market your reports to be used to screen tenants or employees, you are a consumer reporting agency and you must follow the requirements of the FCRA," the federal law on consumer reports. A pre-date check is not for jobs, renting, credit, housing or insurance decisions. This is general information, not legal advice.
Before you share your own number
The same settings protect you. Before you give a match your number, open WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, X and Facebook and decide who can find you by it or see your photo.
You also don't have to share it early. Tinder suggests keeping conversations on Tinder while you get to know someone, and warns that bad actors "often try to move the conversation to text, messaging apps, email, or phone right away." Bumble has in-app video and voice calls so you can talk without handing out your number. Tinder's list of things never to share includes your home or work address and your daily routine.
And never read a code back to a match. The FTC says: "Anyone who asks you for your account verification code is a scammer." One version uses a Google Voice code to set up a number tied to your phone.
Red flags
- The number isn't on any messaging app, and they refuse a video call.
- Their profile photo shows up online under a different name.
- Their WhatsApp profile photo shows a different person from their dating photos.
- They push to leave the dating app in the first few messages.
- They ask for a verification code, money, gift cards or crypto.
Scams on dating platforms are common. In a Pew Research Center survey from July 2022, 52% of Americans who had ever used a dating site or app said they had come across someone they thought was trying to scam them. For the scams to watch for on one app, see our guide to Tinder scams.
If something is wrong
If a match asks for money or a code, stop replying and don't send anything. Keep the messages. Report the profile in the dating app, then report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov. If you sent money, call your bank or card company straight away. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, the FBI says to call 911 or your local police.
A quicker check before a first date
If you'd rather not do this by hand, TrulyWho checks a match's public accounts, photos and work from their email or phone in about a minute. You can see what a report looks like in the example report.
FAQ
Can I find someone's social media by their phone number?
Sometimes. Searching the number inside Facebook won't show a profile, and Instagram has no documented number search. Saving the number and opening WhatsApp can show a profile photo, which WhatsApp shows to any user by default. Telegram and Signal each have a find-by-number setting the person controls, and X and Snapchat can suggest the account from your contacts if the person allows it. On LinkedIn, the person decides through 'Discoverability by phone number'.
Can someone find your social media through your phone number?
Yes, on some apps, unless you change the setting. On Facebook the number can be used to suggest your profile to people who uploaded it. On Signal, 'Who can find me by my number' defaults to Everybody. WhatsApp shows your profile photo to any user by default. Check each app's privacy settings.
How do I find someone's Instagram from their phone number?
Instagram's help pages describe two ways to find people: connecting your contact list so it recommends accounts, or the Search tab. Instagram doesn't describe either as a search by phone number. Instagram says that when someone confirms their number, their account may be recommended to users who have that number in their device's contact list. So syncing your contacts may bring up their account, or may not. A reverse image search of their dating photos works even when the number finds nothing.
Is it dangerous to give out your phone number on a dating app?
It is a normal step, but it lets a match look you up on apps that allow it, and it opens the door to code scams. Set your find-by-number settings first, use in-app calls until you have met, and never share a verification code.
Is it legal to look someone up before a date?
The federal law on background reports, the FCRA, turns on how a report is used, and a check for your own safety before a date is not among the uses the FTC lists. Its 2013 guidance says reports used for employment, housing, credit or the like trigger FCRA obligations. In a September 2023 release, the FTC said a company that markets reports to screen tenants or employees is a consumer reporting agency under the FCRA. Never use a check for jobs, housing, credit or insurance decisions. This is general information, not legal advice.
